Selecting the Correct Foundation Color

To select the perfect foundation shade for your skin, you must be able to identify your skin's undertone and surface tone. What is the difference between and undertone and surface tone?

The key difference is that one always stays the same - undertone - and the other can vary - surface tone. Your undertone is the natural tone of your skin. If you are fair skinned, you will always be fair skinned even when the shade of your skin varies due to age or sun exposure.

Your surface tone will vary throughout your life depending upon skin factors such as acne, redness or hyper-pigmentation.

How to identify your skin's undertone:

  1. The 2 primary skin undertones are cool and warm.
  2. The majority of people in this world are warm undertones - 97% to be exact.
  3. Only 3% of people are cool undertones.

The chart at the bottom will make identifying your skin tone much easier! First select the correct undertone group. Then select the correct surface tone from within the undertone group you already selected.

Just a few more details on each undertone group:

  • golden = warm - yellow or olive undertone (fair to medium complexions)
  • honey = warm - yellow or olive undertone (medium to deep complexions)
  • natural = neutral - peach or yellow undertone (fair to medium complexions)
  • beige = cool - pink or peach undertone (medium to deep complexions)
